Toadbounce watched carefully as the squirrel sniffed around the roots of a bush, snuffling around in the underbrush for anything worth eating. She was completely silent except for the unstoppable sounds of her quiet, steady breaths and the beating of her heart in her chest; a light breeze and the sounds of late leaf-bare birdsong masking her body's noise from the prey in the forest. She took a few more steps forward, placing her paws slowly and deliberately so that she avoided crunching any leaves or twigs underpaw.
She crept closer, the smell of the rodent ripe in her nostrils - but suddenly the wind shifted, carrying Toadbounce's scent towards the squirrel. Its head shot up and at the sight of the warrior, it zipped away in the direction of the nearest tree. Toadbounce followed, her careful pawsteps turning into an energetic sprint as she pursued it. She disrupted the squirrel's path, sending it in another direction in the undergrowth. Still, she pursued, paying no mind to where it was leading her. All she could think of was the thrill of the chase, focused on bringing food back for her clan.
The squirrel fled into a thicket of raspberries, and Toadbounce still followed, though her chase was finally cut short when the plant's sharp thorns dug into her paw and leg.
"Ouch!" she yowled, hissing in pain. She was halfway into the bush by the time she was able to bring herself to a stop, though she was lucky enough to escape mostly unscathed along her chest and face. She was less lucky when it came to her left front leg, which was covered in scratches and a few stubborn thorns that embedded themselves deep in her pawpad and fur.
Whimpering softly in pain, Toadbounce carefully disentangled herself from the prickly bush. The squirrel was now long gone, to her dismay - though she likely couldn't kill it in this condition anyway. Head hanging low, she limped back to camp empty-jawed.
She immediately made her way to the medicine den, doing her best to avoid the gaze of any other warriors in her embarrassment.
"Silverflame?" she mewed cautiously as she stuck her head into the den, but she realized a moment later that she didn't catch his scent. Instead, she saw Hazelpaw.
"Oh! Hello, Hazelpaw," she mewed. "I-uh, need some help," she mewed meekly. "I'm covered in thorns..."
