AUDITIONING FOR HIGH RANKS

Because high-ranking cats are such an integral part of the site and the culture surrounding the Warriors universe, we want to make sure that our high ranks are perfect for the roles. For this reason, we are holding auditions to fill the several high rank positions we currently have open.

The application process is the same as it would be for making a normal cat. You will fill out the application (either template or freeform), per the norm; the difference here is that you will include a sample of your writing skills in conjunction to the application itself. You will post both as a reply to this thread, and once your audition has been chosen, you will be asked to post it to the WIP apps section of the site.

Additionally, please keep in mind that the minimum age is 40 moons for leaders, 25 moons for deputies, and 20 for medicine cats (though we'd prefer 30+). Also be sure to check and see what we have suggested as the amount of time your leader spent as deputy in the Clan Lore thread.

For the writing sample, please write using one of the prompts below.

Open Deputy Positions

CavernClan:

[/i]. While on patrol along the border of CavernClan territory, your deputy finds a loner, rogue, or kittypet that claims to want to join the ranks of the CavernClan warriors. How does your deputy handle the situation? Would they chase the stranger away, or advocate to Batstar that they should be allowed to stay?

Prompt 2. A couple of tunnels that fall under CavernClan territory have collapsed, and it is believed that a few warriors are trapped beyond the rubble, having been on patrol when it happened. Your deputy is in charge of orchestrating the rescue party. How do they go about it? [/ul]

MeadowClan:

[/i]. While on patrol along the border of MeadowClan territory, your deputy finds a loner, rogue, or kittypet that claims to want to join the ranks of the MeadowClan warriors. How does your deputy handle the situation? Would they chase the stranger away, or advocate to Graystar that they should be allowed to stay?

Prompt 2. Graystar is injured after being involved in a scrap with a fox in his latest patrol and has to stay in the medicine den for a few days to recover. In the meantime, your deputy must step up and take control of the clan. How do they handle the pressure of leading in Graystar's absence?[/ul]

ReedClan:

[/i]. While on patrol along the border of ReedClan territory, your deputy finds a loner, rogue, or kittypet that claims to want to join the ranks of the ReedClan warriors. How does your deputy handle the situation? Would they chase the stranger away, or advocate to Torrentstar that they should be allowed to stay?

Prompt 2. After some minor flooding of the beaver dam ReedClan calls home, an elder and a couple of kits are unaccounted for. Your deputy must step up and do what they must to find out what happened. Where do they begin their search? To what lengths will they go to locate their missing clan-mates? [/ul]

Open Medicine Cat Positions

MeadowClan:

[/i]. You've received a vision from StarClan—a cryptic message featuring several unfamiliar cats screaming, being swallowed into the shadows of a thick, strange forest, and a smug-looking she-cat with thick, vivid red fur. Troubled, you do your best to parse through the meaning of this dream and eventually take it to Graystar. What do you tell him? How do you interpret this vision?

Prompt 2. Peonystar has finally passed on, her old age finally taking her to StarClan, and it's up to you to guide Graywind to the Star-Drip Cave in order to receive his leader name and nine lives. What do you say to Graywind to reassure him? Do you say anything? What do you think of him as a deputy? Do you think he will do well as a leader?[/ul][/ul]

ReedClan:

Former medicine cat and your mentor, Pikeleaf, has been grievously wounded in an accident, and try as you may, it seems as though her life as the ReedClan medicine cat is soon going to come to its end. Some important herbs have been scarce within the ReedClan territory as of late, so you turn to Hawthornstar in order to discuss the possibility of crossing through bordering clan territory in order to make it to allied MeadowClan territory to find the necessary herbs. We currently have open medicine cat apprentice positions for BranchClan, CavernClan, and MeadowClan. However, we are going to wait until all medicine cat positions have been filled before opening the site up to MCA auditions.

PERSONALITY

Silverflame is a very fierce and hot-headed tom, despite what his name might suggest. He's a very no-nonsense cat and hates being ordered around by anyone except for his leader. He's very stern and takes his duties incredibly seriously, always keeping himself busy. He's not a huge fan of idle chit-chat and doesn't have a lot of patience for conversations, but he's always willing to listen to another cat's problems and give them advice. He would never turn down a cat in need, whether they are from Reedclan or outside of it. Despite his rough exterior, however, he truly does care for his clan. He has a soft spot for kits and younger apprentices, though he would never openly admit this fact. Silverflame is truly happy in his position and wouldn't give it up for anything in the world.

HISTORY

SILVERKIT | Silverkit and his siblings were born on a nice, warm Greenleaf day to their two loving parents, Paleflight and Riverheart. For the most part, his kithood was uneventful; though unlike his two siblings, Silverkit wasn't really interested in becoming a warrior. He didn't really fancy having to fight other cats, and he was too clumsy to be a good hunter. So instead, he set his sights on the position for medicine cat apprentice. Spending what free time he had in the medicine den, he would often ask Pikeleaf to tell him about some of the herbs that happened to be laying around in the den. He found that he quite enjoyed learning about each herb and its intended use, and he absorbed the knowledge fairly quickly. When he told his family about his intention, they were all supportive; so as the time for their apprentice ceremony approached, Silverkit counted down the days until their ceremony, waiting with bated breath.

SILVERPAW | Fortunately, his dreams were quickly realized. Their apprentice ceremony was held; while his two siblings followed the path of a warrior, Silverpaw's mentor was to be Pikeleaf, the Reedclan Medicine Cat. The young tom was quite excited to begin his training, to Pikeleaf's amusement. He spend much of his training cooped up in the medicine den, memorizing herbs and organizing the storage. On occasion, he and Pikeleaf would leave camp to search for more herbs for there storage. He felt it was quite lonely, though; focusing on his training, he hadn't really seen his family all that much. He was beginning to miss his siblings. Upon realizing this, he started making more of an effort to spend time with them.

His sister and brother earned their names several moons before Silverpaw himself. Even so, he was incredibly proud of them. They were full blown warriors now! Whenever Silverpaw wasn't busy in the medicine den, the three would often take the time to take a walk through the territory. Lakewatcher and Ripplefrost told him all about their experiences as warriors, while Silverpaw would excitedly tell them about his own training with Pikeleaf. For many moons things were calm; however, one day, trouble struck. Lakewatcher led a patrol to check the borders, but when they returned, she had been injured gravely. As it turns out, they had been attacked by a fox while out there, and while they had managed to drive it out, Lakewatcher had been injured badly.

She spent several days in the medicine den. Pikeleaf and Silverpaw tried very hard to attend to her wounds and heal her, but her wounds had been too much for the poor molly. Silverpaw was right by her side as she passed away, devastated by the loss. It struck him quite badly; he had failed. Despite how hard he'd tried, he hadn't been able to save her. He retreated into himself after this, and made a vow to never let this happen again. After holding vigil for his fallen sibling and burying her, he threw himself right back into his training, more devoted then ever.

SILVERFLAME | The day he earned his full name was one he would never forget. He was now a full blown medicine cat, although he still had much to learn. He was always learning new things, and with Pikeleaf there to give him pointers and tips, things were calm for many moons. He had a fairly good relationship with the molly; he was one of the few cats he considered a friend. She was wise, confident and patient, and he held an immense amount of respect for her. So, the day that she lost her life, leaving Silverflame as the Reedclan Medicine Cat, was an incredibly devastating day for him. The loss of his mentor hit him very hard. Anxiety and self-doubt whirled in his mind, but for the good of his clanmates, he pushed it away. He had worked hard to be ready for this; he could do this.

He mourned the molly's loss for a good long while, but now he is looking toward the future. Only a couple moons ago he received an apprentice of his own, and he does his best to be a good mentor to her and to teach her everything she needs to know.

"Pikeleaf! I'm coming! Hold on!"

Desperately grabbing a mouthful of herbs, Silverflame whirled around and darted over to where his mentor lay. Due to an accident, the molly had been injured quite badly. Silverflame picked up the pace, his ears laying flat as his heart pounded in his chest. He had to do something. He couldn't let her die. Not like this. He wasn't ready. For the sole responsibility of taking care of Reedclan; for losing his mentor and good friend.

The silver tom skidded to a halt, his eyes widening as he took in the sight of his mentor. She lay stretched out on the ground; many wounds littered her body, but she had knocked her head very badly. Blood pooled on the ground around her and her gaze stared out into the distance, glazed over with pain. But as Silverflame approached, she made an attempt to turn her head, gritting her teeth in pain, and gave him a weak smile as he crouched by her side.

"Hang on, I've got you. Stay with me." He couldn't keep the panic out of his voice as he got to work, placing cobwebs against her wounds to stop the bleeding. However, Pikeleaf knew that her time had come. She had lost far too much blood; it was only a matter of time. She blinked sluggishly and opened her mouth, her voice raspy and weak.

"Silverflame." She coughed weakly, her body shuddering. The tom refused to stop, his eyes narrowed in concentration, and she repeated his name in a sharper tone. "Silverflame. Look at me." With a sharp inhale, the tom slowly sat up and gazed down at the molly. His eyes were misty, tears pricking the corners of his eyes. She smiled sadly, gazing up at him with half-lidded eyes.

"I've taught you... Everything I know." Pikeleaf murmured, fighting to stay awake long enough to comfort the tom. "You're-You're ready. I know you are. Please... Have confidence in yourself. Reedclan is relying on you." Silverflame felt a shudder run up his spine. With a shaky exhale, he lowered his head and buried his nose in his mentor's pelt, barely holding back a sob.

"P-Pikeleaf... I'm-I'm so sorry." He sniffled and closed his eyes. "... I'll miss you. I promise, I'll-I'll take good care of Reedclan." He was still nervous; he didn't know if he was quite ready for the responsibility. But as Pikeleaf gazed at him, warmth and pride in her eyes, it gave him the confidence boost he needed.

"I know... you will." With one last breath, Pikeleaf slowly closed her eyes, and drifted off. Silverflame slowly sat back up, gazing down at the former medicine cat with a mournful gaze. Unwilling to part with her just yet, he began to carefully groom her fur, sharing tongues with Pikeleaf one last time. After a few moments, he slowly stood up and turned around, his gaze steely. It was time for him to break the sad news to the rest of the clan.

It was time for him to take the mantle of Reedclan medicine cat.

PERSONALITY

Bubbly, friendly, and bright-- Wildflower is best known for the sheer, shining force of her personality which remains cheerful even through the darkest of gloom. She has an insatiable urge to know and befriend just about any cat she comes across, chipping away at even chilly exteriors with determination, and she possesses a fiercely loyal devotion to her friends and loved ones. It doesn't take long to enter her closest circle and, once there, Wildflower will put her life on the line for these cats. Clanmates automatically qualify, whether they're on good terms with her or not.
This is a cat with a very big heart and a whole lot of love and passion to give, though sometimes to the point of being destructive. Wildflower has a tendency to throw herself into a cause with her entire being, not stopping even at physical cost, and she trusts with that same all or nothing attitude. It can be hard for her to reevaluate her initial impression of a cat, whether good or bad, so once she's decided to trust someone they can very easily take advantage. She gives and gives but doesn't quite know when to stop. She'll fight tooth and nail even when the odds are stacked to impossibility. It's a balance that she often struggles to reconcile-- caring for herself versus caring for others --but she's managed to drag herself through rough times through sheer force of optimism before and remain her constantly cheery self.

HISTORY

Wildkit was born as part of a litter of three during the last, fading days of greenleaf. Her mother had been energetic and healthy throughout her whole pregnancy, but for whatever reason the actual birth was a struggle fraught with complications. By the end of more than a day of labor, Specklefur had only barely been saved from bleeding out and only one of her kits could be coaxed into breathing while her other two siblings lay still. This was Wildkit-- named for the strength of her spirit and her strangely curly fur.
The first moon of her kithood was a bit lonely, as her mother spent a long time recuperating from the birth and she was the only kit in the Nursery, but eventually she was gifted with a friend. Another of MeadowClan's queens, Leafheart, had given birth to two kits named Mosskit and Stonekit just a few weeks after Specklefur's. The former of the two, a small, shy little girl, became fast friends with Wildkit and they were practically joined at the hip by the time they were apprenticed.
Different in personality as night and day, Wildpaw and Mosspaw nonetheless spent every free moment together and drove their mentors somewhat mad with all their badgering requests to train together. Wildpaw's mentor, Berrynose, was a respected senior warrior of the Clan and the harder of the two to sway. She would relent, occasionally, but guided Wildpaw's training with a firm paw and helped to temper her boundless energy with some discipline, teaching her how to channel that fire into fierce loyalty toward her Clan. Both her and Mosspaw's apprenticeships passed smoothly, and it was with joy that they both graduated to become full warriors of MeadowClan-- Wildflower and Mossdapple.
A few moons passed as Wildflower settled comfortably into her new duties as a warrior, but there was somewhat of an upset when a young loner was found listlessly wandering nearby the Clan's borders one day. A black tom with strikingly ice blue eyes-- he was skeletal thin and barely keeping on his paws when the Clan cats found him and, later, would only say that his name was Cold. He was allowed to stay long enough to be nutured off of death's door, and by then he showed some interest in joining the Clan as an apprentice. His age was difficult to tell-- somewhere in the realm of an older apprentice or young warrior --and he possessed some skill in hunting and battle, but he needed to be taught the Clan's ways. So he was given to Wildflower to mentor.
Cold-- now named Coldpaw --was... sometimes difficult to work with. Cagey and almost always silent, he didn't respond to any of Wildflower's attempts at friendliness for a long time. Though he caught on quickly to what she was teaching. He'd frown and growl at her casual touches and lighthearted teasing, unnerving the naturally skittish Mossdapple, but still Wildflower carried on as if not at all perturbed, despite the fact that her friend often professed that she didn't trust him. It was a point of contention between them, making things tense as Coldpaw eventually, slowly began to thaw to Wildflower to become something like a friend by the time he was deemed ready for his warrior name. He was named Coldeyes.
Wildflower and Mossdapple had always been exceptionally close, to the point that many of their Clanmates assumed them to be mates, but they'd never probed outside the bounds of friendship. Maybe there was thoughts of it on either side, unspoken, though Wildflower's growing closeness to her former apprentice put any of that potential down where it lay. She continued to disagree with Mossdapple's cautious distrust of the tom, to the point that it eventually sparked a major argument that drew them apart for moons at one time. In that period, Wildflower and Coldeyes grew closer still.
Then he disappeared.
Despite their growing relationship, the tom had always refused to speak on his life before coming to MeadowClan and he'd seemed... content with his life in the Clan. It made the shock of his departure even more painful, as they'd been sharing a nest one night and the next morning he'd vanished without a trace. All trails disappeared across the border, and it was deemed that Coldeyes had left of his own volition. Heartbreaking, of course. And made even worse by the fact that Wildflower discovered she was expecting kits soon after. It was a very dark period for her, but thankfully Mossdapple recognized how her old friend was hurting and stayed by her side without judgement, supporting her alongside Wildflower's parents and other Clanmates. Whispers passed through the Clan, but the sire of Wildflower's litter went carefully unmentioned and life, as it does, went on.
Surprisingly, the birth was almost the easiest part of the whole ordeal. It was without trouble that Wildflower later gave birth to her litter in the dead of leafbare-- bringing two small toms into the world that she named Shadekit and Cinderkit. Both the solid black of their absent father, but with the green eyes of their mother. Wildflower initially worried that just being around them would be hurtful, that she wouldn't be able to love them as she should, but her concerns proved unfounded as she threw herself into raising them.
The distraction of it was helpful. And by the time that Shadepaw and Cinderpaw were apprenticed Wildflower found that she was... okay. Healthy sons, a loyal friend, supportive Clanmates-- with these things she reasoned that she could be alright. Since then, life has been uneventful for her, something she's content with, and she remains her optimistic, brightly passionate self.

WRITING SAMPLE

Wildflower shouldered her way out of the medicine den with a frown playing at the corners of her mouth, tail swaying restlessly side to side and a shadow lingering behind her normally vibrant green eyes. She'd just finished speaking with MeadowClan's medic, being informed of the damage that accursed fox had inflicted on Graystar, and while the leader would live the situation wasn't looking great, either. He wouldn't be able to leave for at least a few days, and who knew how long it would be before the normally capable tom would be back to leading at full health. Until then, there was a mantle WIldflower needed to step in and fill.
On one paw that was something she'd been ready for from the moment she'd been named deputy-- being second in command of the Clan meant she had to be-- but so suddenly? Graystar still had multiple lives to his name, and the she-cat didn't expect to be thrown into the driver's seat this abruptly. She had to take stock of her new duties that needed handling, but more importantly she had a Clan of cats looking for answers. First things first...
Speeding up her pace, Wildflower took the last few strides to MeadowClan's meeting place at a bound before leaping up onto the perch and settling back on her haunches. Cats milled around in the clearing below, a palpable sense of unease drooping tails and twitching whiskers, but eyes began to shift toward her at the movement. The rest followed when Wildflower opened her jaws to let out the summoning words: "All cats old enough to catch their own prey. Join me for a Clan meeting!"
Minutes ticked by as cats, young and old, emerged from shaded burrows and trailed forward to gathering beneath her perch, and Wildflower waited patiently until all were assembled. A hush fell. The quiet prompted a prickling feeling of unease to begin crawling beneath her pelt, but the curly furred she-cat blew a focused breath out her nose and braced herself to speak.
"Hello, everyone." Wildflower began, offering a gentle smile as her voice began softly before swelling in volume. "I doubt I have to tell you all that Graystar has been attacked by a fox in our territory. No one else in his patrol was injured, thankfully, and I've just finished speaking with [medicine cat]; he will be okay." Relieved murmurs passed through the assembled crowd and Wildflower let them roll before she raised her tail, requesting silence again. "I won't lie to you, though. He is hurt, enough so that he will need to stay in the medicine den until deemed fit enough to leave, and it will take some time for him to heal. We just need to give him that time. Until then I will do my absolute best to lead and protect you all, because you are my family, and even if I might not be ready to fully fill his pawprints yet I do think that Graystar has at least taught me enough to manage that much." A soft breath, followed by a grin that crawled slowly into place on her maw. "Anyway. [Medicine cat] is requesting that no one try to visit for the rest of the day, otherwise they, and I quote, 'won't be able to move around so many fat furry butts'. I'll let you all know what the status is tomorrow, and we can hopefully all start bothering Graystar while he's trying to sleep. That is all."

PERSONALITY

being young, gopher is naïve and is far too willing to give second chances. she takes herself very seriously and leaves no room for mistakes, but with others, she is very patient and kind. she is not sensitive, however, that doesn't mean that she's willing to put up with flack. she can be fierce and devoted, and isn't afraid to speak her mind, even when it might not seem like the most appropriate situation. in conversation, she might seem smooth and easy going, but in reality she's very skittish and anxious, always worrying about how she's coming off or sounds to others. she is very self-conscious, but always looks to uplift others. She can be a bit playful at times, when nobody else is around to lighten the mood, but it can often come off as childish.

HISTORY

kithood-
gopherkit born to ashfeather and rootfire, alongside two brothers who did not make it days after birth. mother ashfeather is distant but gopher grows up independently, not really needing her approval. follows rootfire around often when he's in camp, notable for constantly chasing his tail around and talking about becoming a warrior like him. is found out to have poor eyesight, but that doesn't stop her from getting her way in the nursery.

apprenticed to kitetail, trains under him as a warrior for two moons. during these two moons, she experiences strange streams that she at first tells rootfire about, who directs her to pipitfur. the medicine cat informs her that these are omens, dreams that she has been having as well, and that it's likely starclan desires her on the path to becoming a medicine cat. gopherpaw won't complain - her faith in starclan has been growing strong, and she would much rather develop that than further her warrior skills. not too great a hunter so far, but an excellent fighter.
once she is nine moons, she transitions from a warrior apprentice to a medicine cat apprentice, and begins training under pipitfur. she finds the world of medicine and interpreting signs from starclan much more interesting and stimulating than being a warrior, though she does occasionally miss scuffling around with kitetail and the other apprentices.
earns her full medicine cat name at eighteen moons, becomes gophergaze.

pipitfur retires when gopher is twenty-four moons. gophergaze feels odd about this development, wondering why she wouldn't want to serve starclan for the rest of her life, but she keeps quiet. the den is very lonely, but she takes company in her father's presence, and occasionally visits kitetail and the warriors she used to train with, oftentimes freshening up on basic fighting skills.
at night, much to the chagrin of those around her, she goes for walks by herself to clear her mind and gather her thoughts. she likes to be alone so that she can speak to starclan, pray to them and talk aloud to those that she's lost or has communicated with before during dreams at the star-drip cave. her faith is now strong and unwavering, and she struggles with those who have no belief in starclan.

Gophergaze didn't understand when others said that silence was awkward.

The air didn't feel thick with tension, or words left unspoken but dying to be said. She found comfort in it, especially considering the amount of... thought, and digestion, that Peonystar's death required. Had Graywind spoken a word the entire walk to the Star-Drip Cave, why, the molly might have had half a mind to cuff him over the ear.

If, though, she had to point out any prickling fur and uneasiness, she would say that it all radiated off of the deputy, soon-to-be-leader himself, Graywind. A sideways glance at him, and she could tell that his nerves were likely acting up. Who wouldn't be anxious, at a time like this? She remembered when Pipitfur decided that it was her time to retire, and even though she'd received her full name, even though she'd been dubbed trained enough to carry the weight of the Clan's health on her shoulders, her paws, then, still felt too small to fill in Pipitfur's pawprint.

But StarClan guided her. And they would guide Graywind too, certainly. The tom had a strong faith, one almost akin to hers - she appreciated that in him. As a leader and medicine cat duo, they would get along swell, she thought.

"Graywind," she mewed softly, slowing her step so that she might brush her shoulder into his. "I know how yer feelin'. But StarClan has guided you every step of the way so far, ain't they? So tell me, why would they stop now?"

The medicine cat paused, whiskers twitching. "If they had thought Peonystar made the wrong decision, at any point in havin' you as 'er deputy, from the moment she called yer name to the moment she breathed the last bit a air out of 'er lungs, don'tcha think they woulda done somethin' by now? Send a sign, strike you down, anythin' like that?"

Maybe these weren't the right words to be giving. Graywind was a rather... serious time, but with how nervous he seemed, maybe he did need something to lighten the mood. He was always so tightly wound... StarClan, give him a life fer relaxing, why don'tcha, she thought.

As they approached the cave, she came to a halt.

"Les' take a deep breath before we go in. It'll do us both some good," Gophergaze suggested to the tom, and inhaled deeply, exhaling softly.

With that, the silence returned, and she found herself no less comfortable than she did earlier as she entered the cave.

PERSONALITY

strategic. zinnianose is known for having well-thought out plans when it comes to battles. she is not a mind-reader, but she knows the other clans enough to know their strengths and weaknesses and be able to use them to her advantage during battle. she often gets stressed when things are happening spur of the moment, or if there is an argument where she does not have enough time to think things through. she would not do well with impulsive cats. she enjoys practicing mock-battles with her clanmates and teaching them her own strategies so that more of her clanmates can apply her knowledge to battles.

organized. to go side by side with her strategic trait, zinnianose is organized. everything needs to be thought out, and though she is a warrior, even seeing a sloppy medicine cat den upsets her. she is constantly cleaning out her nest and making sure that everything is in order. she thinks out patrols to the micrometer, determining who would be best suited to hunt with who, who would work out with who, and who shouldn't even go near who.

outgoing. she likes to make friends and get to know everyone. while she may have more unfriendly motivations for getting to know someone (like knowing their strengths and weaknesses), she is, generally, a friendly cat. though she is hostile at borders, she is open to making friends at gatherings. she is always eager to get out of camp and hunt with her clanmates, or do anything, really. one of her favorite pastimes is swimming, and in her opinion, it is a great way to bond with someone by swimming together.

fierce. zinnianose takes no shit and refuses to let anyone else be talked down to wrongfully. unwarranted disrespect is her biggest pet peeve.

judgmental. despite being so open, zinnianose is also quick to judge. she dislikes those with half-clan familial relations, or those who have previously broken the code. she has a tendency to doubt others abilities when they are not doing their best or pushing themselves to do the best she can.

independent. zinnianose does not like having to rely on others, which can be tricky, especially when it comes to health. she hesitates to see the medicine cat when she feels herself getting sick, and only goes when it starts to really get bad - even then, she may need a little push. she would like a mate someday, but every time she catches herself longing for one, she scolds herself, telling herself that she doesn't need anyone else to be happy, and that she's fine on her own. she also has trouble talking out her problems with others for this reason.

sharp-tongued. when set off, zinnianose can have quite a bitey mouth, and is oftentimes more bite than bark.

stubborn. she has strong beliefs, and is not very fond of changing them. this can make it difficult to get into arguments with her, as even when she knows she's wrong, she gets upset and isolates herself for a brief period (her outgoing personality, though, makes her quickly want to retreat to interacting with others). she is not entirely hardheaded though, and can be turned in the right direction with enough persuasion.

HISTORY

born to scarletdrop (a dark ginger tabbt she-cat with bright green eyes) and privetwing (a solid white tom with fluffy fur), alongside her sister, tawnykit (a russet tabby with yellow eyes), zinniakit was off to a rocky start. they were born during a harsh leaf-bare, and their father was very sick. to make matters worse, her and tawnykit's parents were fighting very much due to scarletdrop's accusations of him leaving her for another she-cat while she was pregnant. he had been spending time with another she-cat in the clan, and was demanded by scarletdrop to at least hold off until their kits were old enough to understand why they were fighting.

unfortunately, it never got to that point. privetwing died due to greencough, and zinniakit was left fatherless, with only her mother and sister to accompany her. tawnykit was a good sister - she was competitive, and made things in the lonely nursery fun. they were constantly play-fighting and mock-hunting, always trying to outdo each other. while zinniakit was never as competitive as her sister, she enjoyed the fun her sister provided.

scarletdrop raised them, but she was distant to her kits. she made sure that they were safe and didn't get into too much trouble, but otherwise, there was not a strong bond with her and her kits. she let them play in camp for however long they liked, as long as they came back by sunfall/moonrise, and did not venture out of camp. of course, zinniakit and tawnykit listened - despite their dreams, they would never go out of camp and break the code like bad little kits. zinniakit was harshly dedicated to the code - tawnykit tried persuading her a few times, but zinniakit was not convinced.

then came apprenticeship. there were still no other kits in the nursery, none to look forward to training alongside. things with tawnypaw were okay at the beginning, but as they progressed through their training, it got more difficult. tawnypaw felt as though zinniapaw didn't need her anymore - which was true, considering zinniapaw didn't like to rely on anyone for her happiness - and began to distance herself, growing closer to their mother instead. it was newleaf, with new prey and lots to go around. zinniapaw was spending more time out of camp and acquainting herself with the older warriors. she was fond of the trips she spent outside by the river with her mentor, and adored swimming. she didn't realize that she was no longer as close with her sister as she was when they were kits until late in their apprenticeship, until around the time they became warriors.

she made up with her sister, and when they graduated, she was known as zinnianose, awarded her name for her excellent hunting skills. tawnypaw became tawnyfoot, for her dashing speed. the sisters were close again, and their heads were pressed together as they mourned the death of their mother one night in the warriors den. all tension between them was gone.

soon enough, zinnianose was given an apprentice. there had been a litter of kits born shortly after they became warriors, and the leader had decided she was old enough to receive one. she had a more calm personality than her sister, and she was less overwhelming. zinnianose trained her apprentice, mistpaw, a light gray tom, to the best of her ability. she occasionally butted heads with him, frustrated by his very much more relaxed, uncaring personality. he was sloppy, and that clashed with her need to organize - but it still worked out. she was proud of herself at his warrior ceremony, thankful that starclan had given her the patience she needed to train such a foil for her.

it was worrying for zinnianose when tawnyfoot fell ill. she had gotten greencough, just like her father, and was on the verge of her deathnest. zinnianose sent prayers for her to starclan every night, desperate for her survival. a moon passed, and tawnyfoot was still sick - but she seemed to be starting to recover. zinnianose was relieved when, another half-moon later, she was told by the medicine cat that she had made a full recovery. it was a little traumatizing to think that she could lose her last family member so soon, and she didn't leave her side for a quarter-moon. she hated that she was being so reliant on her sister, but she knew that she needed her deep inside.

zinnianose continues to live in reedclan alongside her sister happily.

Running through a head count one last time didn't seem to provide any more cats than the last time, Zinnianose was disappointed to see, and the uneasiness of a worried mother and fretful son didn't help her thought process.

"The kits were probably with Frogthroat," she said aloud, speaking her thoughts so that she might hear them better over the worried rambling of her Clanmates. If she could stay calm, then she could think, and if she could think, then the faster would find Frogthroat, and Larkdawn's kits.

"He probably looked for the easiest way out of the den to take the kits with him - the hidden tunnel. That only leads out of camp, so they've got to be somewhere in the forest."

The ginger-and-white tabby stopped, eyes narrowing. Finally, she could think clearly. "Salmonleap, take Newtsplash and Icepaw with you, and head left. Chubwhisker, go right with Whimbrelspeck and Carppaw. Torrentstar, Larkdawn, and I will go straight, and we'll all search the forest until we find them."

Whiskers twitching, she glanced to the camp exit, fur bristling with determination. "I'm not setting a single paw back in this den until we find Frogthroat, Viperkit, and Curlewkit."

an elegant white tom with long fur and blue eyes

lionstrike and ivyclaw were fierce warriors, their love of the heat of battle the thing that drew them together. they both valued each other's strength, loving only their duties as warriors more than each other. not entirely romantic, the pair looked to having kits as a way to pass on their genes, to ensure that their talents would continue on to make sure reedclan stayed strong. to say they were not modest would be an understatement, but their desires were soon rewarded with the birth of two kits.

the first was bright golden, like their mother, big and stocky, even as such a small helpless age. 'goldenkit' he was declared, for his pelt and the bright hopes they were placing with him. the second kit was small, bright white and scrawny compared to his brawny brother. 'frozenkit' it was decided for him, for his pelt made him seem as though he had been frozen with snow and ice. strong names, lionstrike decided, strong names that they would certainly grow into.

as frozenkit and goldenkit began to grow, lionstrike and ivyclaw's attentions soon began to shift from both of their sons to just one. goldenkit, living up to the expectations set before him, was growing rapidly, blossoming into a stocky and hard-hitting kit. frozenkit, on the other hand, was seeming like a disappointment. he did not resemble either parent, taking more after his grandmother snowlily, who was white and sleek-furred. he was small, dwarfed by his brother, and while both siblings played well together, it soon became obvious to frozenkit that his parent's gazed at goldenkit with pride and at him with...well, something else.

he voiced such concerns to goldenkit only once, but goldenkit paid them no mind. he was being silly, goldenkit told him. and while frozenkit still loved his brother, he felt a small seed of resentment get planted, and no longer did he voice such concerns outloud.

their apprenticeship soon arrived, and while lionstrike groomed them both to perfection, frozenkit counted more loving swipes of her tongue to goldenkit's fur than his own. he would show them! he would work hard, overcome whatever faults they had perceived and show them a son to be proud of.

he was assigned to ashroot, a steadfast and calm young she-cat. the pair worked well together, and frozenpaw approached his training with eagerness. and while he did not falter anywhere, he was relatively average in regards to fighting, whereas goldenpaw was doing the best. and no matter his strengths in hunting or planning, his parents valued the strength of a swipe rather than the quickness of a catch, and gazed at him with growing disappointment every day.

frozenpaw began to grow bitter, though his growing frustrations were not directed towards himself or even his parents, but towards his mentor. surely she wasn't doing her best to train him and was purposefully holding him back! that had to be the reason behind his faults. and so the camaraderie that they shared before was quickly broken off, frozenpaw becoming short and snarky towards her. and while she tried to convince him to focus on his strengths rather than his weaknesses, he ignored her.

he and goldenpaw finished their apprenticeship together, named goldenbear and frozenfox. and despite his initial pride at his new name, he saw the skepticism and judgement in his parent's eyes. golden was named for his fierceness in battle, while his was for his wit and cunning. he had let his parents down again, this time by the fault of his clan.

clearly, he decided, the clan didn't see his worth, viewing him as lesser compared to his shining brother. the world was against him, it had been from the start. words are taken personally, his insecurities growing more and more as he continued without (or with the refusal) of support and guidance. he was being denied respect and appreciation. soon, his eyes began to drift towards the leader's den. what better way to earn such things than with power?

so his ambitions began to grow, fueled with growing bitterness and insecurity, desperate for something to cling to to show himself he has worth. to show the clan, so filled with cats who viewed him as nothing, that he was something.

but goldenbear, perfect goldenbear, wasn't he the obvious choice for any future position of power? how could he ever compete with someone perceived as so perfect? and so his anger towards his brother grew, frozenfox ignoring (or not seeing) the confusion and hurt in his sibling's gaze.

he received an apprentice, carppaw. a nervous little she-cat, frozenfox felt impatient and frustrated with her. but no, he couldn't let such feelings be seen. he couldn't give anyone the ammunition he was sure they wanted to fire against him. and so he was gentle and patient with her, and she was a good distraction from his paranoia and frustrations. in fact, had he paid attention, he felt better than he had in moons when his focus was directed somewhere other than anger and resentment. but she soon graduated, and he was alone again.

and then, one day, goldenbear was gone. vanished, without a trace. search parties were sent out, often led by lionstrike and ivyclaw, finding only clumps of golden hair along the edge of the territory. it was assumed by the clan that he was dead, killed by something and taken away.

through it all, frozenfox overheard his parents speaking in hushed voices, perhaps raised just enough in volume to let passerby hear. why did it have to be goldenbear, they lamented. why that son? frozenfox felt as though struck through the heart. they wished it had been him who was gone, instead of his brother!

he grew desperate to prove himself, to himself and to the clan and his parents, everyone and everything that doubted and hated him. he flung himself into his warrior duties with renewed vigor, and began to work hard to gain the hawthornstar's favor. but, he knew, it wasn't the leader he needed to become close to, but rather, the deputy.

for if it was power he was after, he needed torrentheart to announce him as deputy whenever she inevitably became leader. and so he continued to work hard, offering input and advice where it was needed and friendship and support when it wasn't. he was careful, careful to hide his desperation and anxiety for power, despite feeling that it is the only way he will ever be worth something. perhaps, he figures, others will view him with the respect and appreciation he wants and deserves if he were frozenstar.

and he will do anything and everything to get what he wants.

they were on patrol when they came across the confidently posed loner that seemed to be waiting for them along their border. frozenfox's step faltered for only a moment, tail swishing to alert the two warriors that were patrolling alongside him to put their guard up as they drew closer to the black figure of the stranger.

"hello there!" the loner called as they approached, smile a bit to large and tail a bit too high when considering the situation he had put himself in. he hardly seemed to be fazed by being faced with three trained warriors. "ah, this is awkward...you see, i've heard about the clans, and i have just been so curious about you guys and i just...well, i wanted to talk to someone about maybe joining! i'm atlas, by the way."

frozenfox almost scoffed at the idea. as though they were a recruiting party, wandering around for foolish loners and kittypets who wanted to fulfill whatever whimsical desire that crossed their minds. a hardly suppressed snicker to his right gave him the confidence that his warriors were in (somewhat) silent agreement. but the tom's scent was familiar, had been scented before, and he knew torrentstar was curious about their lingering visitor along the borders.

he glanced at his warriors, frogfoot and herondive, who looked to him expectantly for whatever his decision was. it filled him with a rush of confidence, to be granted such acknowledgement to await his orders, a teasing of the control he so desired.

"i'm frozenfox, deputy of reedclan." he then finally stated to the cat before him, watching him carefully. "any sort of decision like that would have to be taken before our leader." he watched, and hated what he saw. the cat's eyes widening with surprise at the title he bore, looking him over, chin raised, as though doubting his ability to hold such a rank. even rankless cats looked down on him! (never mind the lack of malice in the other tom's eyes, the glance innocent and curious at worst).

"go and let torrentstar know we have a visitor." he ordered his warriors, eyes still locked to atlas. he listened, waiting as he heard the pair's racing paws fade, counting the breaths and calculating the time it would take for them to return to camp, to seek out torrentstar and inform her of the occurrence. he couldn't risk doing anything to irritate her, to send the loner away when she might have wished for an audience. but he couldn't stand the look the other gave him.

and so he lunged.

a fast attack, quick and unexpected, catching the other tom's ear with his claws and tearing the thin skin. "get out of here." he snapped, "and don't return." atlas, caught off guard, fled, tail low and ears flat. he watched before looking down at his paws, and carefully, quickly, raked his own claws against his shoulder, enough to draw blood but not enough to scar. he would have to make sure to pick his claws clear of his fur before returning home.

an unfortunate misunderstanding, he would sadly explain when he returned. the young tom, impatient and eager to show his worth, had attacked. no cat would judge frozenfox for his decision to chase him off. no cat would be upset, the decision made being one that would not divide opinions towards him. after all, they couldn't have such an unpredictable warrior in the clan, could they?

WRITING SAMPLE

"Are you sure?" Spiderpath titters as he watches the stranger, before sparing a glance over his shoulder at the rest of the patrol. He knew that folks in the clan had mixed views on outsiders joining-- and sometimes, he felt that the only reason he was saved from any terrible scrutiny was because he was some poor kit, but the kittypet staring expectantly at him was a full grown adult. They could even be older than he was-- a life indoors is much more kind to a given cat than one in the clans. Especially Cavernclan.

There's a conflicting feeling in his chest-- he knows that Batstar's word is law, and that his leader was... more or less welcoming. He feels a kinship, a pang of sympathy, here; and yet, there's a feeling of trepidation attempting to bury itself in his gut. He knows that the answer here is simple: bring them to Batstar, and let him decide. But, there's something he wants to do-- a choice, for the kittypet that knows nothing. He'd have liked to know his options, had he any, as a lost kit.

So, after a long moment of consideration, he gestures for the other warriors to carry on with their patrol. "I'll escort them, if that's alright." He'll try and ignore any questioning or judgmental looks, and instead focus on the wide-eyed innocent cat in front of him. Offering them a small smile, he dips his head, then beckons for them to follow with a flick of his tail as he turns around. "C'mon, walk with me first."

He makes sure to stay at an even, slow pace for the kittypet to keep up with. A small mercy. He remembers being tiny, even smaller than he was now, desperately trying to scramble alongside his rescuers on the rough terrain; only for him to be picked up by the scruff and carried the rest of the way. He was fairly certain he couldn't carry this kittypet.

"I used to be a house cat, too. Got separated from my folks-- what about you? Are you lost? I can try and help you find your housefolk, if you think they're still around..." He trails off, pausing after he leaps onto a rock to face the other cat. He thinks of his siblings, who were always so eager to explore the outdoors. Not all of them came home at the end of the day.

"If- if you are here in search of adventure, this isn't it. Trust me. It's hard, and sometimes you go hungry, or get sick and there isn't a twoleg around with their magic healing and it- it sucks. It's not that fun, especially in the caves. You'll rarely see the sun. And it's not wrong to assume that our lifestyle is the most difficult-- there are other clans, y'know. Branch, Meadow, Reed. If you haven't tried scoping out the other clans, I suggest that you do. See which you might be best suited for, which ones will treat you fairly."

He almost forgot to breath, during that little speech. He blinks, and takes a minute to actually let his lungs fill before continuing. "Ultimately, the leader's word is law here. Batstar is welcoming to cats wanting to join, but-- it's harder to teach an adult new habits than a kit. There are cats that might say some mean things. Whisper behind your back. If you're dead set on joining, are you willing to deal with that? Prove them wrong?" He levels his gaze at them, brows knitting together.

Depending on their resolve, he'll take them to Batstar.

WRITING SAMPLE

”Really?” Amberflight’s tone is soft and bemused; looking the kittypet in front of her over with a scrutinizing gaze, the dappled she-cat decides she’ll take a seat, at least hear this potential invader, potential newcomer out. True, she was once a kittypet - that period of her life feels several lifetimes ago. This cat - russet-furred and bright eyed, a tongue of flame in the sun - looks groomed and well-fed, and she reeks of the Twolegplaces. Amberflight is almost impressed; despite her stature over this little creature, she doesn't look afraid. She merely looks even more determined. To prove herself, perhaps? The deputy's ears flick once, twice as she thinks this over. "You understand this isn't just something you can do on a whim. You also understand that we of this Clan live in those caverns there." Amberflight indicates the cave entrance with a bob of her head, another flick of her ears, the bemusement gone from her eyes.

"Most of what we do, we do by moonlight. If you wish me to bring you to Batstar, I'm certain he'd hear you out- I just need you to be understanding of what you're asking of me." Cavernclan and Batstar himself are more open to outsiders joining their ranks; Amberflight herself is more than aware of this, having been taken in by her now-family all those moons ago. But the question remains. "We aren't the only Clan out here, y'know. And we aren't exactly the soft kind, either. You seem... determined, though." Stubborn. Batstar would like that. She turns her head, just a bit, to glance at the warriors waiting a few lengths behind her, each poised and uncertain in case this stranger proves aggressive. Letting out a little huff of air, she finally comes to the conclusion that the kittypet is not to be deterred.

Returning her even gaze to the kittypet before her, Amberflight sets her shoulders and stands up. "Vultureswoop," She meows without looking back, knowing she's just spoken loud enough to gain his attention. "Go on ahead and speak to Batstar. Inform him that I'm bringing someone to speak with him, if he's got a few moments to spare." Behind her, she knows, the warrior has already padded off. After a pause she stands, and the little ginger cat startles. "What, you thought I wasn't taking you seriously?" There's now an amused little purr in Amberflight's tone. "No, we like to take newcomers into consideration here. Bear what I just told you in mind."

With that, she gives a slight stretch; turns to rejoin the remaining patrol behind her. The (now-former?) kittypet is at her heels, her gait almost rabbitlike as she hurries to catch up with Amberflight's long strides.

PERSONALITY

ambitious.
birchfang has, and always will have, high expectations for herself and those around her. being in the third and final litter from her parents, birchfang looked up to her older siblings and was envious of all of the things they had achieved. at a young age, around the time she first became an apprentice, birchfang has pushed herself to grab success and hold on to it for dear life. her ambition, her mentor used to say, will likely get her killed one day. the she-cat doesn't understand the concept of slowing down, and taking things easy. this contributes to nearly every aspect of her life, though nothing more so than warrior duties. greatness cannot be achieved with risks, and the she-cats actions can become a grey area between ambition and recklessness.

charismatic.
perhaps one of the most prominent aspects of birchfang’s personality is her charisma. charm radiates off of her body, and with an award winning smile, it is easy to see why she is liked by so many. the she-cat is very skilled at reading others, and finding out what will or will not work on them. though she is not one hundred percent accurate when it comes to her reads, the she-cat can usually weed her way out of an ugly situation, but flashing her smile and feigning an apology. birchfang is particularly charming around tom cats, or those that identify as a tom. she isn’t particularly good with words, but what she lacks in conversational skills, she makes up for in sheer charm.

petty.
birchfang is, and never has been, the bigger person. she has always been petty, every since she was a kit, and can take small things and blow them way out of proportion. though the she-cat has now gotten this under control, there are times when her pettiness shines through. when she doesn’t get her way, for example, she does take it personally, and isn’t above holding a grudge against you. as an apprentice, this was very apparent, and damaged a lot of her relationships. while she tries her best to keep her pettiness and snide comments to herself, she is far from perfect, and sometimes she does slip.

assertive.
be sure to not confuse the she-cats’ assertiveness for confidence. she masks a lot of her insecurities in a very extroverted personality, and she isn’t afraid to show just how assertive she can be. birchfang doesn’t always know when to quit, and her assertiveness can waver dangerously close to aggression, though she is hardly an aggressive cat. this usually pertains to clan meetings as she is very unlikely to keep her mouth shut about issues that arise involving the clan, though she has been known to speak out of turn at gatherings, even as an apprentice. the she-cat doesn’t do it to overstep her boundaries, but simply to make up for the fact that she is one of the smaller warriors in the clan. by being assertive, birchfang has found that her size is ignored more, and she is taken seriously as a warrior

short-tempered.
tantrums are an art form for birchfang. the she-cat has perfected them, and while she likes to think of herself as short-tempered, the she-cat can definitely put on a show when she is angry, or hasn’t gotten her way. she isn’t particularly rude or abrasive as one might suspect from someone as volatile as she is, but that’s because she doesn’t usually speak when she loses her temper. without speaking, the she-cat can make many cats feel ashamed, just by glaring, a trick she perfected as a mother. the only cat she really feels comfortable speaking to when she has lost her temper is her mate.

envious.
birchfang is a very jealous and possessive cat. if another she-cat talks to her mate, she immediately sees red and can become very overbearing. though she does want others in the clan to succeed, she is envious of those cats that are better at hunting and fighting than she is, and those that are bigger and stronger. her size has always been a thorn in her side, and there isn’t a day that goes by where she doesn’t wonder what her life would be like if she wasn’t so small. birchfang, though she would never admit it, is also jealous of tom cats who can father kits and not have to take time off from their duties. so if she is staring at a tom, she's probably angrily berating them for not having to be in the nursery for six moons after the kits are born.

optimist.
birchfang is one of those annoying cats that is able to find beauty in everything. the glass is always half full, and even if she is staring into the face of death, she would probably be able to find the upside to it. birchfang knows that everything happens for a reason, and that there are more important things to worry about than what could've happened. birchfang is very future oriented, and prefers to focus on what is to come, rather than dwell on her past. if you make a mistake one day, try again the next. for her, there is always a reason to get up in the morning and face the day with a smile.

non-believer.
though she has never told anyone, birchfang does not believe in starclan. the idea that her ancestors are watching the clans is ridiculous to her, and the only thing that could change her mind is if she saw them for herself. to her, if she cannot see something, if she cannot touch it with her paw then it doesn't exist. starclan is an old elders tale, nothing more, nothing less, and she refused to believe in such garbage. however, just because she doesn't believe in starclan, doesn't mean that she doesn't believe in the warrior code. the code is a tangible thing, followed by all four clans, and therefore something that she can get on board with.

HISTORY

“one more kit, mousestep!” the she-cat glares at the medicine cat, agony ripping through her old body. she is not longer as young as she used to be, her life of a warrior soon to be over for favour of the elders den. blindness threatens her eyes, damning her to early retirement. she wonders why she decided to have kits again, her third litter when her first two were so perfect.

“you have another she-kit!” the medicine cats voice is calm, but mousestep could almost hear the smile though she can’t see it. the queen, though exhausted from the effort required to birth her three kits, forces herself to prop herself up on her front legs to look at her kits. they are all tabbies, ranging from the palest of oranges, to orange splashed with white, and a pale grey tabby tom. mousestep’s eyes fill with tears, wishing that her mate – their father – was here to see his kits being born, but starclan had failed her. her final litter would be her responsibility alone, and she would rather die than see someone else raising them. she would raise three strong, healthy kits all by herself, and then retire.

taking in a deep breath, the she-cat observed all three of her kits, concerned about their smaller than average size and frowned. they needed good, strong names so that they too would be strong. with the slightest of smiles, the she-cat swept her tail around her three kits as they suckled at her belly. “graykit.” she spoke softly, but with commitment as she looked fondly at the grey tom. “amberkit.” she purred as the name rolled off of her tongue. “and what name for you, my sweet?” the pale orange tabby mewled more than suckled. the queen gave the she-kit a lick on the head, warmth and adoration lighting her ochre eyes. “birchkit.” the kit stopped mewling and snuggled in closer to her mothers’ stomach, rocked gently by the purrs emanating from the practiced mother.

squeals of joy erupted from the three kits birthed only moons before. snow drifted down from the sky, blanketing the earth in a soft hush.

“momma! what is this?!” you cry out in feverous delight as your small paws make miniscule prints on the ground. you’ve never seen anything like it, having been born just a moon shy of leaf-bare. it was a late pregnancy, and one that wasn’t planned to occur. you are nigh old enough to be out of the nursery with your siblings, while your mother keeps a close watch from within the opening. “it’s so cold!” you squeak out, as you recognize what must be a shiver racing through your spine, shaking your tiny frame. graykit and amberkit are already a rabbits length in front of you, their bodies strong even at four moons old. you wish you were as strong as them, able to play as rough as they do, but your mother warns you against play fighting. she says you are too delicate for that. you become acquainted early with the green eyed monster.

“it’s snow, my sweet.” your mother’s voice is tired, betraying her age, and everyday, her eyes become more white as the cataracts begin to take over her vision. you don’t understand why your mother walks slower than the other queens, or why she is always using her tail to guide her. you understand that she is older than the other queens, but when you ask her if she is going to go back to being a warrior, she gives you a sad smile. “snow.” you test the word out, enjoying the way it rolls off of your tongue, and you are amazed by the brightness it bathes the camp in. you stand shivering for a moment longer before racing after our siblings with pure joy etched on her delicate pale tabby features. you bump into graykit, who growls playfully at her, and then tackles you into the snow. soon amberkit joins as well, and within a matter of moments, you are all soaked to the skin with snow.

“birchkit! come back to the den before you catch a chill!” your mother’s words make your blood boil, and grumbling under your breath, you stomp back to the den where your mother picks you up by the scruff of your neck. you want to protest, but you submit to her. after all, she only wants what’s best for you. she sets you down gently in your nest, and she begins to groom you, and despite yourself, you purr and slowly feel yourself falling to sleep. you dream of being a warrior, swimming through the waters, swifter than all the fish, faster than the eagles flying above you, and a better warrior than either of your siblings,

“let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather before the high mound for a clan meeting!” warriors and apprentices swarm the clearing. you can’t sit still. it is your moment.

there is an air of excitement, your body quivers with anticipation. you hope to get a nice mentor, one who won’t treat you like your delicate. you are beyond annoyed of your mother’s constant worry, and are ready to prove yourself just as adequate as your siblings. you sit as patiently as you can as birchkit is called forward, and he is given his apprentice name. his mentor is a lithe she-cat, with a gnarly scar running along her left flank. amberkit’s mentor is a young warrior, who is almost as excited as she is. it is now your turn. you step forward and the leader looks down on you with warmth, and pride, the same look she has given your siblings. she calls for a warrior, black as night with eyes that bore into your soul. you are terrified as you touch noses with her. you and your siblings cuddle together that night in the apprentice’s den, and sleep soundly.

your first training session is a disaster. your mentor is hard, and angry, and has no time for your excuses, or your pouting. it doesn’t stop you though. you don’t want to do a tour of the territory with your siblings. you walk with a storm cloud over your head and mumble under your breath. your siblings are excited and full of questions. your mentor keeps shooting glares over her shoulder at you. the tour ends on a sour note, as your mentor commends your brother and sister for their attentiveness. she speaks no words to you for the entire trip back, and once at the camp, commands you to get something to eat then go tend to the elders.

you stomp off to the elders den, your nose already curling at the thought of listening to them talk your ear off. you haven’t spent a lot of time with the elders, merely heard tales of their never ending tirades about the past from the older apprentices in passing. you have also heard of the infamous mouse bile, and you hope that the medicine cat hasn’t been around in the last little while. you poke your head in, and one of the elders is licking their chest fur and barely starts when you enter the den. he looks at you, and you gasp at the sight of the left side of his face. there is a pink scar where his eye should be, and scars score their way down from the base of his ear, to the corner of his mouth. his good eye narrows and he calls you over.

“finally! in my day, I never made the elders wait for clean bedding. get in here and get this soiled moss out of here.” his voice is hoarse, and he smells stale. you realize that he probably hasn’t had a proper grooming in a while. you glare up at him and your whiskers twitch. “i have been busy with my mentor, thank you very much! and if you didn’t stink so bad, your bedding wouldn’t be so soiled!” you realize after you have spoken that you are out of line, but you refuse to apology. the tom cocks his head to the side, and to your surprise, he smiles. “feisty one, aren’t we?” he laughs at your expense and then shoos you away to bring back more bedding. against all odds, heronstep becomes your confidante.

you continue your training, and to your dismay, your brother and sister are growing stronger day by day, and are beginning to resemble your mother in body and in mind. you are still small, lithe and quick on your paws, but you are not strong. your endurance is not up to par, and you fear that you are not cut out to be a warrior. you spend a lot of time with heronstep, speaking about your woes, and more often than not, he is blunt with you.

“birchpaw, you are not like your brother and sister. they have the minds of warriors. you still walk around with a chip on your shoulder, thinking you have something to prove, but don’t do any extra work to prove whatever it is. buck up, kid. I’m sick of your complainin’.” heronstep has no time for your temper tantrums, and though he hurt your feelings, you know he is right. you still see yourself as the kit that wasn’t allowed to play with your siblings, and that you will never be good enough to be a warrior. it takes you until you are three months into your training to realize it, but you now know that you have been wrong. reedclan cats are not born to be big and strong, clumsy and heavy footed. they are born to be swift, and sure footed, silent as a hawk soaring through the air.

you awake the next morning with a new fire in your heart, and determination that can’t be bridled. when you present yourself to your mentor, you speak with respect, and are rearing to go. nothing can stop you from becoming the warrior you were always destined to be. crowscreech is impressed with your feverity, and she pushes you to your limits. you hold your own in battle training, pushing harder and harder. you thrive while hunting, your lithe frame and long legs making it easy to cover the distance. before you know it, it is the morning of your final assessment. you have come a long way from the whiny, entitled brat you were when you first became an apprentice, and you refuse to let your brother and sister show you up.

eagleclaw is the most handsome cat you have ever laid eyes on. he is older than you, and has no time for you, but you are enthralled with his grace and success as a warrior.

you never really saw yourself as the type to want a mate, but whenever you look at eagleclaw, butterflies erupt in your stomach and you can’t speak. you become jealous of his relationships with other she-cats, and he isn’t even your mate. the tom has no idea who you are, but you are hard pressed to show him who you are and make sure that he remembers you. you try every time you are on a hunting patrol with him, and you are first to offer your assistance when the leader wants something done. it takes about four moons, but soon the elusive tom knows your name and asks you out on a patrol with him. you smirk at him, and tell him you’re flattered but not interested. you have conquered your prey, and stolen his attention away from the other she-cats. no, you will initiate something when you are ready.

you are twenty moons when your sister announces that she is pregnant. jealous boils your blood; everything always came so easy for ambersong, while you’ve had to work. her mate practically grovelled at her feet before she accepted him as hers. you’re annoyed that she would be the first to bear kits. your mother is thrilled, and will tell anyone who will listen that her daughter is pregnant. according to heronstep, she never shuts up and drives the other elders crazy. you tell him of your jealousy, and he gapes at you and shakes his head. he tells you that you could have it too, if you would stop playing games with poor eagleclaw. you know he’s right. again.

shortly after your sisters kits are born, you become pregnant. you have spent the last several moons getting to know eagleclaw, and making sure he is the right cat for you. you were reluctant at first, but the tom finds your temper enticing, and your ambition intriguing, and he never stops you from going after something that you want. so when you announce that you want to be a mother, he is more than happy to oblige. you know that you will have to take some time off from your warrior duties so that you can stay healthy for your unborn kits, and it leaves a sour taste in your mouth but you don’t argue. all you ask is to be able to remain a warrior until the last possible moment. and you do just that.

you have an easy pregnancy, and for the most part, you follow the medicine cats instructions. you don’t necessarily follow them to a tee, but enough that you don’t put your kits at risk. you give birth on a chilly green-leaf morning to four beautiful kittens. you and eagleclaw argue over names – as you do about most things – and finally agree one adderkit, cinderkit, honeykit, and lynxkit. you have three she-cats, and a tom, respectively, and they are the most beautiful creatures you have ever laid eyes on. your sister and her kits – now four moons – are almost as excited as you are about the new additions to the rapidly growing family, and though your mother is completely blind now, she is overwhelmed with pride at the ‘sight’ of her grandkits.

heronstep has told you that he would come an visit you after your kits were born, but he has yet to show up. you have been confined to bed rest for two days prior to the birthing, and are becoming increasingly uneasy about the entire thing. eagleclaw runs interference for the two of you, but he reports nothing suspect after visiting with the ornery old tom cat. however, eagleclaw was wrong, as was nearly everyone else who had visited with him. the medicine cat said something happened that caused his body to convulse, and it put too much strain on his heart. he had a stroke, though these words were not used directly. your heart is heavy with the news, and you grieve silently, unable to sit vigil with your oldest and dearest friend.

“adderkit, you get your tail back over here or so help me!” you sound like your mother, though none of your kits are as fragile as you were. their energy rivals your own, and you pray for the days of before.

your three other kits play around your body, attacking your tail as it flicks with agitation at their sister. adderkit is the spitting image of you personality wise, and some days you want to strangle her. you watch her with annoyance as she trots back to you, all high and mighty, but one look at her face and she shrinks in on herself. she squeaks out an apology and goes to play with her siblings but as she turns away, you snag her by the scruff of the neck and drop her between your front paws. you begin to groom her, while your chest vibrates with the force of your purrs and you laugh as she complains about you ‘babying’ her.

your time in the nursery is relaxing, but you are going stir crazy. five moons laying around doing nothing is clawing at your sanity and you are very ready for your kits to become apprentices. they are definitely their father’s children, and even with them being the only kits in the nursery, it feels crowded. you love your kits with all of your heart, there is no denying it, but you long to be back out on the moors racing after a rabbit, and telling off the other clans who venture a little too close to the border. you are almost thirty moons, and you haven’t even had an apprentice yet. your dreams of becoming deputy and then leader are falling out of your grasp. at this rate, you will never have reach your dreams. you think to yourself what your life would look like if you and eagleclaw had decided to stay kitless, but all you see is emptiness. you would do it all over again.

“birchfang, I trust that you will teach newtpaw everything that you know about being a warrior.” you are excited; you finally have an apprentice. the stocky tabby walks towards you and you touch noses with him. there is a fire in his eyes. you are in for a hell of a ride.

your apprentice is smart, almost too smart. he has a sharp tongue and more often than not, you are left exasperated at the fact that he can outwit you. you thought that four kits were a pawful, but you never expected to be tested by an apprentice. he is younger than your kits by three moons, a product of a she-cat and her mate, whose names escape you. they have high hopes for their son; the only kitten to carry to term. you aren’t so sure he will survive his apprenticeship.

“not like that, newtpaw. you are landing too heavily. watch again.” your voice is curt, but there is no impatience. your life as a mother has taught you that patience is a virtue when it comes to dealing with the younger cats of the clan. your mentor never had any patience with you, and you refuse to make the same mistakes with him. you stalk the training area, pretending that you are locked in a showdown with an enemy cat. your paws fall lightly, your muscles taught so that you can react at a moments notice. your apprentice watches you with a scowl on his face as you duck down, roll on your back out of the way of the make-believe warriors attack and then spring back onto your paws. the move is over in a blink of an eye and as you turn to look at your apprentice, he is yawning. “defensive movement is just as important as offensive.” you scold him, a glare present on your face. he doesn’t meet your eye.

newtpaw shows great potential as a fighter, but his hunting leaves something to be desired. you run your voice hoarse explaining again and again the way that reedclan cats hunt. you explain the technique involved, how important it is to power your hunt with your hind legs, and to pay attention to the movements of your quarry. after several failed attempts, the two of you wander back to camp, you pouting about your incompetence as a warrior, and newtpaw yawning with exhaustion. you instinctively make your way towards the elders’ den, meaning to speak with heronstep, and then you remember that he is dead. it’s a hard blow to take every time you are made to remember. you let out a sigh, and find eagleclaw instead. you find him laying by the entrance to the warriors’ den, sprawled out with a she-cat sitting uncomfortably close to him.

“greetings lavenderpelt.” your tone is not friendly, your eyes cold and your ears turned back slightly. she looks at you with her bright blue eyes and the smile drops from her face. “hey birchfang.” her voice quivers as she dismisses herself from the situation. your mate glares at you, and you glare back. you aren’t afraid to remind him that he is your mate, and it would be a dark day if he ever forgot it. you lay down beside him and he begins to groom you as you complain about your apprentice.

“maybe he doesn’t understand the move when you show it to him entirely. have you tried walking him through it from start to finish?” eagleclaw purrs as he speaks, and while it seems like such a simple solution, you can’t believe you didn’t think of it yourself.

with eagleclaw’s suggestion in mind, you set out the next day, determined to make sure your apprentice succeeds. he greets you, cheerful as always, and prances behind you with his tail straight up in the air, chatting your ear off. you are equally as cheerful, but yours is channelled in a different way. as you reach the training area, you face newtpaw and tell him exactly how the day is going to go. he responds with a nod instead of words for once, and while you are taken back slightly, you smile crookedly and the two of you begin. it is smooth sailing from there.

the day your kits become warriors is the happiest day of your life – other than their birth. they have grown into fine warriors, exceptional additions to reedclan. addertail is an extraordinary hunter, and you know that she got it from you. cinderstrike is a skilled fighter. honeysong has an uncanny way with words, and can soothe even the busiest of minds. lynxheart is the poster child for clan loyalty. you sit with eagleclaw as you listen to your four kits receive their warrior names, and your heart swells with pride. you look deep into the eyes of your mate, who stares lovingly back at you. he rakes his tongue over your cheek and whispers that he loves you

for someone that grew up in a territory covered in water, birchfang found herself resenting how wet her pelt was. it was the damp cold that sank through her fur and into her bones that made her resent it, and her sour mood was only intensified by the intense longing to be warm again. the dam breaking was an minor inconvenience, but a messy one.

kits were freezing, elders were freezing, warriors were freezing, everyone was freezing and it made for a pretty gloomy atmosphere. her demands were shrill as she barked orders to her warriors to start repairing the dam as best they could, and her replies to complaints were short and accompanied by an annoyed glare that darkened her orange gaze. this is not something she wanted to deal with, not today, not tomorrow, not ever. yet, here she was, overseeing her clanmates working diligently to repair their home, and all she really wanted to do was find her mate, get him to groom her, and to fall asleep pressed tight against his body.

“birchfang?” the voice pulled her from her thoughts and she whipped around with a storm rolling over her and snapped “What!?”. the young she-cat shrank in on herself and dropped her eyes. birchfang sighed and instantly felt guilty. she had seen that look on her daughters’ faces numerous times, and birchfang regretted being so short with the young warrior. it wasn’t her fault the dam broke and ruined her mood.

“uhm, we can’t find ivykit, poppykit or gorsetail.” she mumbled the words, shuffled her paws and refused to make eye contact with the deputy. it took a minute for her words to sink in, and once they did, birchfang's stomach dropped. if any of them were washed away in the flooding, the outcome was more than likely grim; especially for the kits. from the older she-cats recollection, gorsetail had always been formidable, so perhaps she would fine if found promptly. with thoughts rolling around her head, birchfang called out to some of her warriors. once they assembled before her, she felt sorry for them. they were exhausted, and wet, and looked like they needed a good meal. birchfang wished she could provide that for them.

“i’ve just been informed that ivykit, poppykit and gorsetail are missing,” birchfang paused, watching their expressions change from exhaustion to concern. they all knew the gravity of the situation, and the need for swift action. “i need one of you to double check the nursery and to check in on littlestep, she’s probably pretty distraught. if need be, get her poppy seeds to calm her down.” one of the warriors stepped forward and volunteered, birchfang nodded to them and they took off. the other two warriors stood with their tails flicking with anxiety.

“ok, ternflight, i want you to check the breach, look for any tufts of fur that could belong to one of the three. ask your clanmates if they saw anything. it was pretty hectic for awhile, but maybe someone knows something. get going.” dismissing them, birchfang turned and gestured with her tail to the remaining warrior. “you and i are going to inspect the run off. i will search the other dens, and see if they are huddled in there. report back to me. we are not stopping until we find them. if any other cat is not busy right now, tell them to come find me. send a prayer to starclan for me that we bring them home safe.” though the she-cat had no belief in the dead cats, a prayer couldn't hurt.

with a heavy sigh, and quick nod, the warrior took off. birchfangs’ heart went out to littlestep, knowing the mothers’ fear all to well. for maybe that reason alone, birchfang would find her kits and return them. the other outcome was far too heartbreaking to even consider. with a new vigor fueled by a mothers love birchfang set out, determined to bring her clanmates home alive.
